چکیده

An investigation of detonation diffraction through an abrupt area change has been carried out via a set of two-dimensional numerical simulations parametrized by the activation energy of the reactant. Our analysis is specialized to a reactive mixture with a perfect gas equation of state and a single-step reaction in the Arrhenius form. Lagrangian particles are injected into the flow as a diagnostic tool for identifying the dominant terms in the equation that describes the temperature rate of change of a fluid element, expressed in the shock-based reference system. When simplified, this equation provides insight into the competition between the energy release rate and the expansion rate behind the diffracting front. The mechanism of spontaneous generation of transverse waves along the diffracting front is carefully analyzed and related to the sensitivity of the reaction rate to temperature. We study in detail three highly resolved cases of detonation diffraction that illustrate different types of behavior, super-, sub-and near-critical diffraction.

Shepherd Contribution to Fy 04 Asci Annual

Experiments were carried out in FY04 on detonation wave structure, detonation wave diffraction, and the fracture of thin-walled tubes by detonation waves. Computations were performed on detonation wave propagation and the elastic response of tubes to detonation loading. One new effort was initiated on the diffraction of detonation waves, and the other activities were a continuation of previous ...

Numerical Study of Blast Initiation of Detonation Using a Two Step Chemical Kinetics Model

The effect of chemical reactions on the blast initiation of detonation in gaseous media has been investigated in this paper. Analytical method is based on the numerical solution of onedimensional reactive Euler equations. So far, analyses on the blast initiation of detonation have modeled the combustion process as a one-step chemical reaction, which follows the Arrhenius rate law. Previous stud...

Unidirectional Propagation of Gas Detonations in Channels with Sawtooth Walls

We study the detonation propagation in a channel geometry that suppresses detonation propagation in one direction, allows it in other direction, and does not create flow restrictions in the channel. The geometry consists of a series of divergent sections separated by wedges that form a sawtooth shape. Numerical simulation show that the detonation fails to propagate through this geometry in one ...

A Study of Detonation Diffraction and Failure for a Model of Compressible Two-Phase Reactive Flow

A two-phase model of heterogeneous explosives, with a reaction rate that is proportional to the gasphase pressure excess above an ignition threshold, is examined computationally. The numerical approach, a variant of Godunov’s method designed to accommodate nonconservative terms in the hyperbolic model, extends previous work of the authors to two-dimensional configurations. The focus is on the b...
